Databricks Genie ZeroOps: Your Self-Healing Agent?

Introduction

There was so many announcements back at Databricks Data + AI Summit 2026, you'd be forgiven for getting announcement fatigue. Here at Advancing Analytics, we are incredibly excited about Genie Ontology, check out our videos for more, but I also believe Genie ZeroOps is another game changer ready to shake up Data Engineering!

What is Genie ZeroOps?

In an alternative fantasy land, pipelines would always succeed and never need maintenance or refactoring. Sadly, as any data engineer will tell you, we don't live this that fantasy land and often they can spend most of their days fixing issues instead of building new. Pipelines break, models drift, errors are thrown and the burden to look after them is only growing especially as Databricks estates grow with AI assisted creation. Databricks found up to 53% of an engineer's time was spent on maintenance. They identified a problem, so they've created Genie ZeroOps to be your helpful self-healing agent.

For every failure*, Genie ZeroOps will run these steps:

Detect - 24x7 monitoring of platform metrics, errors, logs, run history and events from Databricks observability layer.
Assess - Using Unity Catalog lineage, an agent will assess the impact of the failure across the whole dependency graph. Checking what is the downstream impact and critical level. Another agent will check upstream, going back to the root cause of the issue
Remediate - The agent will produce it's proposed fix within the CI/CD workflow (GitHub PRs etc.).
Verify - The agent will run the fix against a shallow clone of the data within a secure sandbox. Running the fix against real production-like data without write permissions to production data or data copy. No code changes are made without human approval.

*Note that failure could include pipeline, task, model, PII risk, anything where engineers would have previously investigated and had to perform steps to remediate.

TLDR: An agent to monitor, investigate and suggest fixes for assets, without production write access and with a human in the loop.

How will it present?

Databricks plans to surface all the incidents ZeroOps has detected in an 'inbox' format to create a one-stop-shop for all failures it has detected, and the fixes it proposes. You will notice at the top a 'ask ZeroOps' chat box to configure and engage with Genie ZeroOps agents. Below is a list of incidents, sorted by severity and so most critical incidents appear first. Severity is defined by the agent using linage and usage statistics so most widespread, important issues have the highest severity. Status shows if the issue has now been resolved, ensuring engineers don't tackle problems already fixed, which can be filtered out as well.

Why am I excited about ZeroOps?

I started my career in Managed Services, maintaining and managing Data and AI assets across Azure and Databricks. I spent hours investigating major, noisy incidents caused by a whole host of issues from source data to code changes. I had to understand data linage upstream to identify root cause and downstream business impact. All this whilst translating error messages to business users at any time of day.

With Genie ZeroOps, Managed Services will now have an agentic co-worker who does all the time-consuming legwork, all the way from tracking linage, to understanding business impact, reviewing logs, and generating a solution (often whilst the engineers sleep!). The role of Managed Services will focus on areas agents will struggle with, business context, rollout across estates & fine tuning it's parameters.

Q: When can we expect to see Genie ZeroOps?

A: Private Preview started July 2026, you can register interest with Databricks here. Some folks have been granted access but expect more hands on over the next 12 months.

Q: Do I need to give AI agents write access to production?

A: No, Genie ZeroOps creates a shallow clone of your data in a secure sandbox. It validates fixes against that shallow clone, leaving your data untouched by the agent.

Q: How is it governed?

A: Genie ZeroOps uses Databricks unity catalog, so it can only access data and assets you can access.

Q: Will it integrate with existing ITSM systems?

A: That was also mentioned at summit, there are plans to integrate Genie ZeroOps with tickets to give engineers an early boost on incidents, if not also raise them similar to it's inbox view.

What's next for Genie ZeroOps?

Customers got their hands on ZeroOps in private preview from July 2026. We can expect rounds of development, refinement, integrations to existing systems and stability before GA on the roadmap for this FY.... Watch this space, maintaining pipelines might just get a whole lot easier!
